The Homeschooling Gestapo

“So how was school today?”

When I am asked that question the wheels begin to spin and I think to myself, How do I answer this? Are they going to criticize me for our decision to homeschool? Is this one of those “super” homeschool moms who is going to be shocked when I say we didn’t start school until 10:00am? Is this person trying to one up me and see how the competition is going? Is this person going to turn her nose up at me because I don’t cook organic food?

Then the doubts begin to fog my mind…I’m ruining my kids. They will never be able to get a job. They won’t be able to function with others

And I buy into the lies of the Homeschooling Gestapo.

Yes, we have to turn in our paper work to the local homeschool association, but we do not need to worry about someone looking over our shoulders every minute of the day to make sure we are “doing it right.” Deuteronomy 6 tells us what to do as parents. And if we are true to scripture, then that is what matters.

What is your goal for your Homeschool? I’ll tell you what mine is. And there is nothing noble about my goal. It’s just where God has led me and I want so much to be in the middle of His will for our homeschool.

My Homeschooling goal is this: I want my kids to know Who God is and then hopefully decide to serve Jesus in His kingdom. I want to see my kids SAVED and SERVING.

My goal doesn’t include math and science, although we learn those objectives.
My goal doesn’t include college, although I think that would be wonderful.

We Homeschooling Moms have got to come to the point where we decide to serve God and not Man. It doesn’t matter what other moms and dads think about us and our homeschool. It doesn’t matter what school philosophy you choose.

It does matter if you are being obedient to what God wants for you and your family.

So check your homeschool goal. I reevaluate my goal and priorities all the time. Make sure your priorities are working towards that goal.

And tell the Homeschooling Gestapo to take a hike!

  1. A few days ago someone from church found out that we are a homeschooling family. I was like ” Oh no, here we go!” the first thing she asked me was about homemade organic cleaning solutions. I had no answer. She says, “I thought you people knew all about organic living.” I did not get the homeschooling memo on that one!

  2. It’s funny how stereotypes form. We are always asked “do you homeschool?” I wonder how people know that! Do we look “different” or something? I didn’t think we did! 🙂 But, Amen on not comparing yourself to others. We ALL go through that and I need to remind myself of that all the time.

    • I think people automatically assume families homeschool when they have many children. But when I think about it, when I was teaching, there were very few kids from large families. I wonder if people find it surprising that there is more of a homeschool movement among professional parents with 1-3 kids AND single moms going on right now. I find it fascinating!

  3. I was speaking to a lady at church on Sunday and homeschooling came up (we’re in our first year) and its always so nerve wracking, you never know what they are going to say, and she said, if I was raising kids now, that’s what I would do. I breathed a deep sigh of relief and continued the conversation comfortably!

It’s that time of year when blogs post the “best of the best” posts. So I will be doing that for the remaining days of the year. I will be looking through my summaries of data and also remember those posts that you Readers spoke about to me in person. For many of you newer followers, this will be an opportunity to read the FFS favorites. Please leave your comments and likes. Enjoy!!

  5. This is great – I don’t homeschool, but it’s so easy to fall into the trap of ‘keeping up’ with everyone else. “Saved and serving”…. amen! Of all the crazy things parents focus on, that’s all thats going to matter in a few years! 🙂
