Big, Honkin’ Potatoes

The garden is now finished. We harvested the sweet potatoes last night. It was so funny to listen to the kids as we pulled those potatoes from the earth.

“These are big, honkin potatoes!”
“I know! This is a big, red, honking potato!”

So enjoy this slideshow of the big, honkin’ potatoes. That one potato that is greater than Sweet Cheek’s head weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces! Continue reading

How Does Your Garden Grow? – Harvesting Potatoes and Onions!

The family got up and moving this morning. We all went out to the garden to harvest the onions and one row of potatoes. Let me tell you the story behind the potatoes…

My wonderful husband went to the Feed and Seed to buy seed potatoes. He’s a math guy. (I love him so much!) And he’s in the store trying to figure out what is the best deal: to buy individual potatoes as seed or to buy the pound sack. He does the math and comes home with the sack. A 50 POUND SACK of potatoes!!! So we have four times the potatoes this year than we did last year. Anyone have any awesome potatoes recipes??? Continue reading

How Does Your Garden Grow?

If you’ve been keeping up with my weight loss posts, then you know I’ve written about working in our garden.

So I thought I’d introduce you to the Family Garden.

It’s actually really neat to do this. My husband is the one who grew up living with a large garden, not I. So I am in the process of learning. I have A LOT to learn!! But it’s neat because the kids and I are learning the same things at the same time. We’ve begun a study of plants (I’ll share that in another post!) and it is fun to see the kids apply their learning to the garden.

We live on 1.5 acres of land and we are attempting to cultivate it and see what it produces. It’s been fun! …And frustrating, at times, when something doesn’t grow as it should.

It’s a lot of work, and we certainly don’t put as much time into it as we wish we could. But if it produces, and we can be generous to our friends, then I say it’s worth the effort!

Besides…God is the one who makes the plants grow. He can overcome our ignorance!
